What is Typhoid Fever?

Typhoid fever is caused by the bacteria Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi). Fever and stomach ache are signs of a small intestinal infection. Typhoid fever is also known as enteric fever. A close touch with an infected individual or contaminated food or water can spread this bacteria. If treatment is delayed or not given properly, serious health problems may result due to typho. With milder symptoms, paratyphoid fever is comparable to typhoid. It was caused by S. Paratyphi, or Salmonella Paratyphi. The Salmonella bacteria, which causes salmonellosis, the most prevalent food poisoning, is not the same as S. Typhi or S. Paratyphi.

What are the stages of Typhoid Fever Symptoms?

Typhoid fever symptoms might appear gradually in four stages. Antibiotic treatment at an early stage can prevent you from moving on to later stages.

Stage 1:

Five to fourteen days after coming into contact with S. Typhi, you may begin to experience typhoid symptoms. A fever that increases over a few days is the initial symptom; it is referred to as “stepwise” since it increases gradually. At this point, the bacteria is entering your blood.

Stage 2:

The bacteria is growing in your Peyer’s patches, which are a portion of your immune system that detects dangerous invaders, during the second week of a fever. Along with other gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea or constipation, you will begin to experience abdominal pain.

“Rose spots,” which are little pink patches on your skin, could appear look like a skin rash during this stage.

Stage 3:

Usually the third week after the onset of symptoms, the bacterium might cause serious harm if antibiotics are not used. Serious side effects, including as intestinal bleeding and encephalitis (brain inflammation), occur in some individuals.

Stage 4:

Most people start to get better at stage four. Your higher fever starts to decrease. Even when you feel better, you could still be contagious since S. Typhi can live in your gallbladder without producing any symptoms.

Relapse of Typhoid:

When individuals appear to be completely healed from typhoid fever, some people get sick again. This is called relapse. A week or so after finishing antibiotics is when it normally occurs, but occasionally it occurs weeks or months later. Compared to the first time you had typhoid, your symptoms will most likely be less severe.

Which tests are used to diagnose Typhoid Fever?

Typhoid fever is diagnosed by laboratory investigations, which include:

  1. Blood Culture: Determines the presence of Salmonella Typhi.
  2. Stool Test: Checks for the presence of bacteria in the intestines.
  3. Widal Test: Detects specific antibodies in the blood.
  4. Urine test
  5. Bone marrow
